The Grace Home Children report

Name of child            : Ramkumar (Davit) Parayer
Address                      : Dhola, Dhading.
Date of birth              : 1st June - 2009
Position of child         : semi - orphanage
Arrival date in GH      : 2nd week of October - 2009

Family Background

Davit was living with his parents, and his younger brother in Dhading.  Their life was very difficult because
they were very poor. His parents were tailors, and did not earn a very good living.  Davit father drank a lot,
and committed suicide when Davit was 10 years old.  After this, life became very hard and his mother decided to
work as a servant for a rich family.  She kept her home with her children and went to work every day with her youngest
son.  Davit worked in a well off family’s field in order to have food and clothing.  One of Davit’s neighbors knew of
Grace Home and (John) Kapil Devkota (the gerent of Grace Home) and told John about Davit situation.
Consequently, Davit was welcomed into Grace Home in 2006.

Family

Davit has two uncles who call periodically to deliver news.  Twice a year, Davit sees his mother, and if she
has enough money, she comes into Kathmandu to visit him.  Family is very important to Davit.  Each time he receives
clothes, he keeps some aside for his younger brother.  At the start of his stay at Grace Home, he spoke a lot about
his family.  Davit is the oldest of the children at Grace Home, and keeps many memories of his childhood with his family.

Integration:

Davit is the sixth child of Grace Home.  His integration was very fast and free of problems.
He immediately took on the role of “big brother” to the rest of the children.  He is very responsible; he
takes care of everyone, and feels very much at home at the orphanage.  Davit is a very curious and clever
child, but also very obedient and serious.  He is interested in computer science, mechanics, and, like many
teenagers, music and cinema.  Davit can be very touchy and take offence when he is criticized, and he doesn’t
take well to losing at games.

Education:

Before Grace Home, Davit hadn’t had much education despite his admission in class one and two of a government school.
He did not have enough money to pay the school fees, so it did not work out well.  He was also weak due to illness,
and lack of food.Upon his arrival at Grace Home, he went to Victory boarding school in KG class.  This was difficult
for him because of his poor English, and he did not have any real educational background.   He improved his school level
very quickly and in the 2007 school year, he was accepted into class one in Rainbow School and became an excellent
student.  He won 3 prizes; one for his honesty, one for best handwriting, and one for ranking in the top 3 of his class.
During his final exams, he achieved at 96%.  He then was able to skip one level and went directly into class 3.
His current school results are very good.

Health:

When Davit arrived at Grace Home, he was very thin and small for his age due to a tapeworm.  This led to many stomach
problems.  As soon as he arrived, he was treated for the tapeworm, and has had no further medical issues.

Name of child               :Anisha Gurung
Address                      :Gumda – 03 , Gorkha
Date of birth                :5th december - 2000
Position of child            :The poorest
Arrival date in GH          :1st  week of October - 2008

Family Background:

Until she was 2 years old, Anisha lived in Gorkha with her stepfather and her mother.  There is no known information
concerning her biological father.  Her stepfather was paralyzed which caused a financial strain on the family and they
were a very poor family.  Her mother worked in Gorkha city in a factory in order to try and earn a living.  During this
difficult time, Anisha went to live with her uncle and work as a servant.  In 2008, Anisha worked in a home close to Grace
Home and she got in contact with the director, John Kapil Devkota.  John took interest in her case, and welcomed her into
Grace Home in April of 2008 when Anisha was 8 years old.  Anisha has a 5 year old brother who lives with her mother in
Gorkha and her step father now lives with his brother but maintains a relationship with his family.  Anisha will sometimes
visit her aunt and receive news about her mother.  During holidays, Anisha returns to Gorkha city to see her family.

Integration

Upon arrival, Anisha was very helpful with duties around Grace Home, in part due to her past working experience.
She was very happy and grateful to be in the home, which made her more eager to contribute to the daily duties.
Despite this, she was hesitant at first due to her new and unfamiliar environment.  She attached herself greatly
to Esther Ghale, one of the girls at Grace Home, which helped Anisha become more comfortable at the orphanage.  Esther
helped Anisha to become more outgoing and personable.  Anisha is a very friendly and like to help others when they are
having problems.  She is a very sensitive child and takes criticism very personally.  Over time, she has become much less
obedient even though she is still one of the most helpful children in the orphanage.  Upon her arrival, Ashina was a
practicing Hindu but has since converted to Christianity.

Education

Before coming to Grace Home, Anisha would sometimes attend a governmentally funded school in class 1.  But when she
enrolled at Grace Home, she was put into KG class at St. Grace School.  She had a hard time in school at the beginning
because she did not speak English, but she had a very rapid and impressive improvement.  She has always been a very serious
student and she enjoys school very much.

Health

Anisha does not seem to have any major health problems, despite her intermittent stomach troubles.
She has had minor issues with her eyes twice since arriving, and one problem with an ear infection.

Name of child                  :Nitu( Radha)  Dhungana
Address                             : Hetawa
Date of birth                       : 22nd september - 2002
Position of child                   :orphan
Arrival date in GH               : 3rd week-November- 2008

Family Background:

Nitu comes from Hetuwa where she was living with her family until she was 7 years old.  She has 2 older sisters and 1 older brother.  One of her sisters lives in India with her sister in law, and her other
sister is working in a guesthouse in the morning and evening, but attends school during the day.  Nitu’s brother is also a student and is doing well.  When Nitu was 3 years old, her father went to work in Malaysia and her mother worked as a housewife.  When her father returned 2 years later, he came with many debits because of a drinking problem, which made it very difficult to provide for his family.  During her
father’s absence, her mother became a prostitute and married another man.  Nitu was then sent to livewith their neighbors because her uncle was busy with his own family and could not take care of her.  Nitu
has an Aunt who is Christian that sent her to a church when Nitu was 7 years old for almost 9 months.  This is where Grace Home found Nitu and decided to take her in.  At the present time, Nitu has no contact
with her mother, and her father is a beggar.  Nitu sees her Aunt during special programs at church and she is very influenced by both her Aunt and their religion.

Integration:

At her arrival, Nitu was extremely shy and reserved.  However, she quickly integrated with the other children at Grace Home.  The other girls were very excited to welcome a new girl.  However, her integration with adults proved challenging, particularly with the volunteers.  Her challenges with the volunteers were centered around communication
difficulties due to her poor English.  Moreover, her difficult past caused mistrust with adults and confounded the situation. Now, her behaviour has completely changed.  She has embraced the family at Grace Home and feels comfortable with everyone.  She has become very affectionate and has a real personality; for example, the boys will tease her and she tends to have the upper hand. At the beginning, Nitu practiced her religion frequently as it was important to her.  However, she has not taken some distance from her religion and practices less frequently.

Education

Before coming to Grace Home, she was at a government school in class 1.  At that time, she was 5 years old and stayed in school for only 1 year.  Now, she is in class 1 at St. Grace School.  Despite her bad English, she improves everyday.  She was held back 1 school level when starting at St. Grace School because the government school she had been attending did not meet the proper educational requirements.

Health

Her main health concern is her teeth. She had 5 infected teeth, which required medicine, and had to remove 2 others.  Moreover, she sometimes has stomach problems, which is rather normal in this country.

Name of child                : Pabina Dulal
Address                          : Simra ( bara) , Nepal
Date of birth                    : 18th  November 1997 - Simara
Position of child                : semi - orphanage
Arrival date in GH             : January – 2007

Family Background:

Pabina is from the village of Thulosirubari.  Her father was a farmer and her mother was a housewife. She has one brother who also lives at Grace Home.  When she was 8 years old, her father committed suicide.
After the death of her father, her family started having money problems and her mother took to working to try to earn a living for her family.  Pabina’s mother then became a servant for the Catholic Church because money became so scarce.  In return, she and her children were fed and given a place to live.  The church tried to givePabina an education along with her basic needs, however she found that the environment to be too religious with an incomplete educational system.  Her mother then decided to send her children to Grace Home.

Family:

At the beginning of Pabina’s stay at Grace Home, she would only see her mother during holidays. As time progressed, she and her mother lost touch.  Pabina has not seen her mother since.  The only family
member that Pabina stays in touch with is her uncle, but they are not very close.

Integration

Pabina arrived in 2006 when she was 9 years old.  She was the 11th child of Grace Home.  Pabina insisted on becoming Saku sister’s assistant in the kitchen.  She easily filled this role because of her past working in the Church. She was easily integrated into Grace Home because of her social personality, as well as having the comfort of having her brother living there as well.  She did have some difficulties with her hygiene because she came from very poor living conditions and was not used to any real hygienic standards.  Pabina is a very sensitive girl, and takes things very
personal.  She is a very respectful and obedient girl, however, with her increasing confidence, she has become slightly undisciplined.

Education

Before coming to Grace Home, Pabina did not regularly attend school.  When she was 9 years old she attended a governmentally funded school in class 2.  Since she arrived to Grace Home, she attends school every day.  She began her studies in 2006 at Victory Boarding School in KG class.  She did not understand much English and had a difficult time with many of her courses.  A teacher arranged to help Pabina after school, and her English quickly improved. She then went to St. Grace School from the summer of 2006 until the beginning of 2007 enrolled in class 1.  In 2007,
she skipped a grade and began in class 3 at Rainbow school.  She has been there ever since.  She is a very focused and attentive student, although sometimes she needs to be encouraged to do her work regularly.  Pabina is very goodin school, and enjoys her studies.  She especially enjoys reading and has a very firm belief in the Christian religion.
This may be a possible direction for her in her future.

Health

Pabina has had issues with her eyes since she arrived at Grace Home.  Her eyes are yellow, and she has conjunctivitis. She has been admitted to the hospital for observation, and she has been advised to eat more fruit.  This is not entirely possible with our limited means here at Grace Home.  We suspect that she is jaundice because of her yellow eyes,
and her yellowing skin.

experience with children.  Sagar and his brother were often sad, and cried for their mother during the night.  They passed all their time together and were very close.  Sajan found it difficult to socialize with the other children for almost 4 months.  He was a very difficult child
